FORMULA STUDENT

Formula Student is a testing ground for the next generation of world-class engineers. Formula SAE is a student design competition organized by SAE International (previously known as the Society of Automotive Engineers). The competition began back in 1978 and is currently on of the largest students competitions in the world. The idea behind it: A fictional manufacturing company has contracted a design team to develop a small Formula-style race car. The prototype race car is to be evaluated for its potential as a production item.

Each student team designs, builds and tests a race car based on a series of rules whose purpose is both to ensure the safety of the competitions and to promote clever problem solving. Each race car is judged in a number of different events which are divided into two parts, the dynamic and the static events. The team receives a certain amount of points for each event according to a variety of criteria stated in the rules. The maximum number of points that a team can receive in FS competition is 1000 points. The team that is awarded  the highest number of points wins the competition.

In the Dynamic Events the cars race on track.

In the Static Events the team is judged based on ideas, management and design.

In the beginning of the competition, the vehicle is checked for compliance with the rules during the Technical Inspection. Its braking ability and rollover stability are also checked before the vehicle is allowed to compete in the dynamic events.

STATIC EVENTS

In the Engineering Design Event the technical aspects of the car are judged, such as the construction and the key attributes of the car. In the Cost and Manufacturing Event, the financial planning of the entire car, including manufacturing and make-or-buy decisions is analyzed. Lastly, in the Business Plan Presentation Event, the team presents a hypothetical business idea, based on the developed race car, to a panel of hypothetical investors in order to convince them to invest in their venture.

DYNAMIC EVENTS

The Endurance & Efficiency event is arguably the most demanding race of the competition. Taking place in a 22 km track, and including one driver change, this event rates the consumed amount of energy in relation to the total time needed to complete the race. In the Autocross event, the fastest lap time wins and qualifies to the Endurance & Efficiency event. In the Acceleration event, the car has to cover a distance of 75 m from standstill, in the fastest time possible. Finally the lateral acceleration of the car is tested in the Skidpad event, in an eight-shaped race track.

STATIC EVENTS

325 POINTS

67

DYNAMIC EVENTS

675 POINTS

In addition to these events, various awards for superior design accomplishments are given to teams with exceptional performance.

Formula Student promotes careers and excellence in engineering as it encompasses all aspects of the automotive industry including research, design, manufacturing, testing, developing, marketing, management and finances. The competition takes students out of the classroom and allows them to apply textbook theories to real work situations.
